Tuesday Evening Concert Series

The Children's Concert Series Archives & Underwriters

The Series has presented children’s concerts, always free of charge, to schools and home school groups throughout the region since 1995. These concerts (lecture/demonstrations) are performed by selected artists who also appear on the Series’ regular evening schedule. The artists chosen for the children’s concerts are internationally-acclaimed performers from around the world who have a particular affinity for communicating with young people and who care about developing an appreciation and understanding of music through live performances and discussion geared to their age levels.

We believe these events provide a needed educational and cultural component to young people’s experiences. We urge the schools to select a majority of students who have not had the opportunity to be exposed to classical music and to treat this as a learning opportunity in a theater, to hear classical musicians play and speak of their lives, how to listen to music, and to discuss the historical and artistic context of music within the world. Each concert hall (usually in the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center) has been filled to capacity or near-capacity by the students. By April 2007, approximately 35,000 students will have attended 31 of these concerts produced by the Series.

Invitations are issued to schools and home school groups in the following areas: City of Charlottesville, the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Nelson, and Orange, and one concert during the 2006/07 will take place in Nelson County. We are told by many of the schools in the outlining areas that they have never been offered such an invitation before.
